As a charity centred around people and positive action, it’s vital for us to understand how people think, feel, value and interact with the Ocean. This means we can create engaging and impactful programmes that connect people with the Ocean.
We’re proud to be a collaborating partner in an exciting new global initiative, the Ocean & Society Survey (OSS). The OSS asks questions about what people know and how they feel about the Ocean, and helps us to see patterns and changes in public attitudes and behaviours over time.
To date, 12 countries have completed the survey, gaining data from thousands of people. We are delighted to have funded the UK survey, the results of which helped us design our Ocean Friendly Homes Campaign this summer. The questions are based on the DEFRA Ocean literacy survey, which was first undertaken in 2022, and which we have continually used the outcomes of to improve our work.
We are excited to see other countries data, so that we can understand the global picture of Ocean literacy and Ocean conservation actions taking place around the globe. To find out how you can get involved, click on the button below.
If you want to find out more about the Ocean & Society Survey, and how it’s being used as a global tool for understanding people’s connection with the Ocean and to mobilise action, then you can read the open-access paper below.
Thanks to lead partners Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition and all the other collaborating partners for making this such a success!
