The Ocean Conservation Trust (OCT) is a charity with the vision of a world supporting a healthy Ocean to sustain all life that operates the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth.
We have been awarded EU funding from LIFE Recreation ReMEDIES: Reducing and Mitigating Erosion and Disturbance Impacts affecting the Seabed for a project taking conservation actions to safeguard five Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) within England. The project aims to restore 8 hectares of subtidal seagrass bed within two areas; Plymouth Sound and the Solent Maritime.
This is an amazing opportunity for an experienced conservation practitioner to be involved in ground breaking efforts to safeguard one of the UK’s most important marine habitats.
We’re looking for an experienced diver with specialist knowledge of plant cultivation. The role will involve working within a laboratory based in the National Marine Aquarium and field based work for restorative efforts. Passion for applied conservation with resilience to challenges is essential.
The role is full time (37.5 hours a week) and will be based at the NMA in Plymouth.
Essential
- PADI Divemaster or equivalent
- Experience of diving in British Waters
- Knowledge of coastal vegetative habitats
Desirable
- Cultivation of aquatic plants
- Degree in marine science or horticulture

The LIFE Recreation ReMEDIES: Reducing and Mitigating Erosion and Disturbance Impacts affecting the Seabed project (LIFE 18 NAT/UK/000039) runs from July 2019 – Oct 2023 and will improve the condition of five SACs between Essex and Isles of Scilly. This will be achieved by restoration, demonstration and reducing recreational pressures. Promoting awareness, communications and inspiring better care of sensitive seabed habitats will be key.
