Here at the Ocean Conservation Trust were have been working with Improving Lives Plymouth to encourage local people to get active and get outside to do some healthy walking.

In England, half of all adults are not active enough to benefit their health. This means that they are at risk of developing serious illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Why walk with us?

  • Walking and talking come very naturally together and walking in a group can make us feel more connected to each other, reducing loneliness and isolation.
  • Walking can improve mood and sleep-quality, reduce stress and anxiety.
  • Being in green and blue spaces is shown to have a positive impact on mental health. Our walks start at the National Marine Aquarium, on the doorstep to the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, which means our walkers benefit from being in both green and blue spaces whilst walking.

These walks are short and over easy terrain and are open to everyone but are especially aimed at those who are least active. The group walks are led by friendly, specially trained volunteers who are on hand to provide encouragement and support, and make sure no one gets left behind.

This Active for All project aims to improve people’s fitness but also benefit their mental health. Being physically active, connecting with nature and other people are all things which have been shown to have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing.

Improving Lives Plymouth’s Active for All project delivers 3 walks a week around The Hoe and The Barbican in partnership with the National Marine Aquarium. These walks take place every Monday and Friday and are free to attend.

Please remember to wear sensible footwear, bring waterproofs if necessary and bring a drink to take along the walk with you.
